Dr. Wayman Johnson
Leadership Alliance Diversity Conference
Dr. Wayman Johnson is the co-founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Academy for Excellence in Athletics & Academics (herein referred to as "Academy").
The Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to enable youth from low-income families and disadvantaged backgrounds to become successful, self-sufficient, and industrious students and adults.
Under Dr. Johnson's leadership, the Academy, DBA Leadership Alliance Diversity Conference, will convene its national student success conference, 2018 Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Closing the Achievement Gaps, which takes place in San Diego on April 18-20 at the Hilton DoubleTree Hotel in Mission Valley.
For 27 years, while he was with the San Diego Community College District, Dr. Johnson served as a college administrator at San Diego Mesa College, where he led several instructional schools and held various leadership positions, including Interim Vice President of Instruction and Student Affairs, Interim Vice President of Instruction. Dr. Johnson was Dean of the School of Information Systems and Instructional Resources, where he had oversight for several academic disciplines, instructional support services, and both instructional and administrative computing services.
Dr. Johnson served as Dean of the School of Multicultural Studies, International Education, and Information Systems, and he provided leadership for many academic disciplines in addition to instructional support services. During 1994 to 1995, Dr. Johnson accepted the challenge of leading in the role of Interim Vice President of Instruction in which he initiated and implemented key enrollment management practices.
Dr. Johnson was also Dean of the School of Learning Resources and Instructional Support. Under his leadership, San Diego Mesa College effectively planned and opened the new Learning Resource Center, which was an overnight success story and a focal point of the College.
While serving as a San Diego Mesa College school dean, Dr. Johnson was responsible for the overall management and supervision of various academic departments: Computers and Information Sciences, Languages, Black Studies, Chicano Studies and the Study Abroad Program. He also provided leadership for several student support programs: campus computer labs, campus independent learning center, campus library, campus learning resources center, work experience program, and campus tutoring center.
Dr. Johnson joined the San Diego Mesa College faculty to teach classes in the Computer and Information Sciences Department. During his tenure as a faculty member and department chair, Dr. Johnson played a significant role in college leadership and governance with his involvement on many college committees including serving as an Academic Senator and a member of the President's Cabinet.
Dr. Johnson was also the chairperson of several San Diego Mesa College committees: The Inclusive Campus Planning Committee, The Communications Committee, The Computing and Telecommunications Study Committee, and The Accreditation Self-Study Standard Two Committee. In each of these committee roles, he served the institution well with a high level of dedication and commitment.
Dr. Johnson’s non-academic professional experience includes being a systems analyst at San Diego Gas and Electric Company; an assistant to the chief financial officer at American Housing Guild; and a supervising systems analyst for the City of San Diego.
Dr. Johnson's community service in San Diego has been dedicated to releasing the potential and fostering the accomplishments of young people. Dr. Johnson’s contributions to the higher education of young people in began when he was an Educational Opportunity Program director at San Diego State University Program. His creative leadership led to expanded student outreach and improved community relations. Coupled with innovative student support services, Dr. Johnson's initiatives helped increased the number of underrepresented students attending and graduating from San Diego State University.
For ten years, Dr. Johnson served the San Diego community as chair of the board of directors and the chief executive officer of the Leadership Alliance for Excellence in Education, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation whose primary beneficiaries were elementary school children and college students. The Leadership Alliance sponsored and convened ten annual, national diversity conferences and hosted several fundraising events for students attending San Diego County elementary schools and local two-year and four-year colleges and universities.
Dr. Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Masters of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from San Diego State University. He earned his doctorate in education from United States International University. Dr. Johnson also attended the University of California, Los Angeles’s, where he completed doctoral courses in the Anderson Graduate School of Management doctoral program.
